Dread Broadcast Corp. – Carnival ’84

Posted by joly on Mar 24, 2010 in DBC, old tape, recast |

Yet more DBC. As mentioned early broadcasts, out of necessity, utilized the “plant the cassette player and transmitter on the tower block and retire to a safe distance” method. By 1984 the station’s technology had advanced to the point of being able to, via relays, do live broadcasts. Even to the extent, in the safety of the Notting Hill Carnival celebrating crowd, of coming live from the street. This snippet, hosted by Ranking Miss P, kicks off with the talents of the young MC prodigy Mekka Stephenson, hoarse no doubt due to toasting night and day, and then goes to station manager Lepke chatting up Portobello Road revelers.

Thanks for all the DBC stuff. I was only able to hear all this stuff after the fact…I lived in Glasgow in the 80’s, but I had the t-shirt ;-). More DBC shows would be very very welcome. Great site.

Thanks. Good to know there are listeners out there. I do have a little more DBC to post. I’ll try and dig it up for you!

That would be fantastic, I have a handfull of DBC recordings but the more the merrier. I was wearing a DBC t-shirt at the Green Man festival in Wales earlier this year when a very excited bloke who lived in London back in the day stopped me to ask if it was an original shirt, he was a big fan and had a few stories of how exciting the shows were. I do have a very fragile original shirt but thats tucked up in a drawer here in my flat, like my own personal Turin shroud.
